CTU thyristor switching modules are designed for switching LC circuits with a predominant capacitive component (tuned compensation stages). The advantage of CTU modules over traditional contactor switching for capacitor stages is the immediate connection of the capacitor without prior discharging. This is possible due to a special design that ensures the capacitor is ready for reconnection immediately after being disconnected. The switching of the capacitor is executed at the moment when the difference between the capacitor voltage and the system voltage before the switching element is zero.

This characteristic leads to another important advantage: a significant reduction in current surges. Current surges can cause faults that may affect the proper operation of electronic devices and can seriously damage or even destroy them. Additionally, the lifespan of capacitors is increased, as only the rated current flows through the circuit. To protect the power switching element against current spikes (di/dt), it is necessary to connect a starting inductor in series with the module.
