Reactive power controllers in low-voltage networks measure the actual power factor and by switching compensating capacitors achieve the desired power factor value.

The supply of NOVAR and PROPHI reactive power controllers is one of the main activities of KBH Energy a.s., which is reflected in a relatively wide range of different solutions. The controllers enable fully automatic and optimal control of reactive power compensation. The product range includes both classic controllers for use in combination with electromechanical contactors and components for fast compensation systems - a fast controller and thyristor switching blocks.

KBH Energy a.s. also supplies other accessories and components for compensation, such as contactors, capacitors, reactors, thyristor blocks for fast and continuous switching, and other components.

The wide range of NOVAR products offers a selection of suitable controllers for the required conditions. The product line includes controllers from economical versions, for less demanding compensation, to advanced solutions for large compensation systems with combined switching in demanding conditions.

The installation and operation of the controller is fully automated, and regulation takes place in four quadrants. The connection and disconnection of compensation stages is optimized; selected controllers allow the connection of decompensation reactors. Higher series devices have increased sensitivity (2 mA) and can be installed in demanding climatic conditions (-40 °C).

Relieving supply lines and distribution networks of inductive reactive power using parallel capacitor banks is a well-known method that has been used for decades. The implementation of this idea is, in the vast majority of cases, compensation switchboards with capacitor banks (typically 6 to 12 stages), which are connected using a so-called reactive power controller. Current applications are controlled by microprocessor controllers that sample the input current and voltage signals, then calculate the electrical quantities and, based on them, implement the appropriate control strategy.
