FORTIS MKP G power capacitors are mainly used to compensate for reactive power and increase the power factor in low AC voltage networks.
Construction
The capacitors are MKP design, with an oil impregnant in a hermetically sealed cylindrical aluminum housing and an IP20 terminal block with six outputs.

They correspond to EN 60 831-1/2, IEC 831-1/2 and UL 810. In our offer you can find FORTIS MKP G power capacitors from 0.5 to 50 kvar, for voltages of 400, 440 and 525 V.

FORTIS are widely used in classic and covered compensation switchboards equipped with electromechanical or semiconductor switching.

Safety

The safety of operation is ensured mainly by a self-healing dielectric and an overpressure fuse. The connection of the capacitors can be easily done using a terminal block with IP20 protection. Mounting/replacing the external discharge resistor module is quick and easy.

Impregnant (filler) The task of the impregnant is to insulate the electrodes of the capacitor from external influences and thus prevent corrosion of metal parts in particular. The dry impregnant used in FORTIS condensers also ensures reliable heat dissipation.

Dielectric self-regeneration

During thermal or electrical overload, or at the end of the service life, electric arcs can occur, causing the plating layers in the center of the fault to vaporize. The gas pressure, created by the action of high temperatures, completely removes the vaporized plating from the puncture site within a few microseconds. At the point of the breakdown, a non-conductive area devoid of plating will be created, which is sufficiently insulated and also voltage-resistant. The reduction in capacitor capacity after regeneration is at the level of approx. 100 pF, i.e. thousandths of the nominal value of the capacitor capacity; the condenser remains fully functional.

Overpressure fuse

The increasing number of self-regenerations (e.g. at the end of the service life, due to frequent electrical and thermal overload) can cause an increase in the pressure inside the condenser. To prevent the capacitor from exploding, each FORTIS capacitor is equipped with a safety overpressure fuse. The principle of operation consists in an interruptible connection of the internal connecting wires. In case of increasing pressure inside the condenser, the lid expands and the condenser is safely disconnected. This mechanism works reliably if the operating conditions for which the capacitor is designed are observed. The overpressure fuse serves to safely disconnect the capacitor at the end of its life. It does not replace short circuit and overcurrent protection. For critical installations, it is advisable to ensure continuous monitoring using the Janitz solution designed for this purpose.
