3. Recommendations for 400 V Networks

Actual voltage in typical distribution systems can reach 420 – 430 V (±10 % tolerance).

  • Without detuning reactors: select 440 V capacitors to avert sustained over-voltage stress.
  • With detuning/reactor-protected PFC: always use 440 V capacitors to offset resonance-induced voltage rise and higher harmonics.

This simple practice extends capacitor life and reduces service interventions.

6. Selecting the Right Capacitor

  1. Measure actual system voltage and THDi (total harmonic distortion).
  2. Determine required reactive power (kVAr) to achieve target power factor cos φ ≥ 0.95.
  3. Choose the rated voltage according to Section 3.
  4. Verify current rating and temperature class (-10 °C…+55 °C).
